Downtown Snow

Downtown Snow

I actually posted this photo last year, but since I have learned how to create better HDR images, I often go back through old photos and really clean them up. The first time I posted this photo, I did so in haste, the same day that the snowstorm happened. It ended up being a little sloppy (although many people liked it) and I was never really happy with it. Fast forward a year and a half and now I really love it and I think this is the way I intended it to look. I won't even link to the original, but you can feel free to search for it on the site.

When creating HDR photos, it is easy to get a huge halo around the edges of objects, especially rough edges like trees. It becomes where when the sky is flat, either with no clouds in the sky or with a cloudy white sky, so the more HDR you put into it, the more halo you get. I have learned to be much more subtle with this so as not to create that awful halo. I was successful this time around with this snow photo.

Many people discover HDR photography and they just go crazy with the HDR effect and it created really dirty, sloppy images, where, at least to me, the beauty of the scene is covered up by the HDR effect. In my photography I won't the beauty of the scene to be brought out through HDR to give you the feeling that you are actually standing in the scene. So for you HDR photographers out there, especially new ones, learn to be subtle. It is actually is a discipline, that is often hard to learn.

I took this photo the same day as yesterday's photo, but I took this before the rain stopped (obviously) and created that awesome sunset.

I took this photo back in 2014 and finally edited it today. These folks were very willing to let me photograph them as they played basketball near sunset at the Columbus Lock & Dam.
