Courthouse Dome

Wed Aug 2, 2017

This is the Chickasaw County courthouse in Houston, a beautiful courthouse with a great dome. It seems like everytime I go through Houston there is a cloudy sky, but I think it really worked in this photo creating a bit of drama which translated well into a monochrome edit.

Mississippi in HDR - Ending Soon

Mon Jul 17, 2017

This will be the 896th day in a row that I have posted a photo on Mississippi in HDR. It has been a lot of fun and very challenging, though through that I believe it has forced me to become a better photographer and better photo editor. Having said that I am most likely goingt to shut down mississippiinhdr.com very soon. In fact, I have set a date for October 31, 2017 to be the last day that I post a photo on this site. There are several reasons for this that I'll explain here. First, it is becoming not very financially practical to continue taking photos as it costs money to travel, and honestly, the photos aren't selling. If you'll allow me to vent just a little, I often run across people who tell me "I love your photos!" and many of them follow that up by saying that they plan to buy a photo or two. About 2% of those people (a generous percentage probably) actually follow through with that. That part is extremely frustrating. Maybe part of that is my fault, I'm not a salesperson and never have been. I digress, because there is little to no money coming in to support the travel and the web site costsI just don't see it as a good decision to continue with it.

Another big change, as a result, is that my work will no longer be availabe for purchase as prints online, but only by contacting me directly (through email or through social media). My work will still be available through my smug mug site for viewing. Because of the limited way of purchasing prints, the prices will go up, so if you want to purchase prints before then, then I encourage you to do so.

My facebook page will not disappear and I will probably post to it from time to time with any updates or new photos. I will continue to be taking photos of Mississippi.

I am not giving up photography, but I am going to combine all of my photography under one name, LIFE photography, which will be available through lifephotographyms.com which will be up and running by November 1, 2017. I'll likely be focusing, business wise, on portrait and event photography but will continue to do lots of landscape photography from both Mississippi and through my travels around the country and hopefully, in the near future, the world. You can go ahead and follow my social media accounts at www.facebook.com/lifephotographyms and www.instagram.com/lifephotographyms.

Feel free to contact me through my social media accounts or at mississippiinhdr@gmail.com.

And, finally, enjoy today's photo from the old Okolona College in the little town of Okolona.

Woodland Cotton Gin

Wed Jun 28, 2017

I posted a photo the other day of the cotton gin with a carriage in front of it. Here is a closer look at the old cotton gin that sits in the middle of town. A great throwback to older times when I'm sure this place was a busy one. I talked to the Mayor of Woodland and she really hopes that this old Cotton Gin can be converted into something useful for the town in the future. I hope that happens as well, because I love to see old buildings restored to keep the character of the town.

You tend to find interesting things when you venture off of the road more travelled in any given town. Not that there aren't interesting things on those roads, and I photograph many things on them, but off the beaten path is where you tend to find more things that don't fit the norm or the cookie cutter style of new buildings that spring up in the developments of towns. Old buildings with great character, whether they are dirty or clean. Buildings like the one above. I am not certain of what this building is used for, maybe a shop, a warehouse? I'm sure someone from the Houston area can fill me on that. I would love to know. These places have lots of stories to tell and they even make you imagine what those stories are in your own mind before you even have a clue what it's used for. So feel free to imagine it yourself and investigate this photo and the things contained in it.

Red Trucks

Wed Jun 21, 2017

Before I took yesterday's photo, I found these two old trucks sitting next to the road just up from the water tower. The textures were great and the red was still pretty vibrant so i knew that it would make a great HDR photo. Texture is one of the things that makes HDR so interesting to me, because it really brings it out of the photo, creating an image that doesn't feel flat, but rather one you could seemingly touch and feel the rust on the truck and the blades of grass. It's tough not to overdo the style in photos like these, which is something I often did when I was first learning. Subtlety (something I've discussed many times in the past) is key in HDR so that the image still feels 'real' and not too diry or dark.

Water Tower

Tue Jun 20, 2017

I love to photograph sunsets and sunrises and beautiful landscapes, but sometimes I see things that are different and interesting to me that doesn't fit into the mold of a typical fan favorite type of photograph. I found this water tower in downtown Houston behind the McDonalds there and the clouds had so much texture agains this rustic tower and I thought it looked really cool. The finished photo turned out just like I imagined it when I saw it.

Found this scene going down a backroad headed towards the dontown area of Houston. I actually stood in the back of our Jeep to get this shot so I can get a higher perspective. I I probably looked a little fun to the cars that passed by while I was doing this. You do what you have to do get a good shot. Aren't these clouds great? It seems that when I plan to go out and shoot that the sky doesn't like to cooperate with me, but they were playing along on this day.

I stopped in Woodland for a brief visit and captured a few photos. While I was taking photos of this cotton gin I actually met the mayor of Woodland, who was very nice, and even invited my wife and I to stay for a movie night that they were setting up for in the middle of town. Woodland is well known around the area for their Christmas light dispaly, which we have been to a couple of times before and it is really great. Woodland is also home to a big furniture store.

Courthouse Eagle

Sun Jun 11, 2017

I took a road trip with my wife yesterday and ended up going through 4 different towns, making a loop back to West Point. I even met a town mayor during the trip. One of my stops was in Houston, which I have photographed before. I actually ended re-photographing the courthouse and this time around I had a zoom lens which I used to close in on the golden eagle that sits atop the courthouse. Fromt the time I took the photo I envisioned it in black and white and I like how it turned out.

Alley House

Wed Mar 22, 2017

I found this little abandoned building (maybe a house?) in downtown Okolona on one of my visits there. I really found it interesting, because it looked so out of place. I don't know if it was once a house or a place of business, but to me it looks like it was once a house that had a downtown built around it. I think I'm just gonna go with that. You never know what you might find when travelling Mississippi roads.
