Church in Winona

Wed Aug 19, 2015

Spotted this church during my Winona walkabout. I've never heard of a Methodist Episcopal church combo, but the building was really nice and I loved how the tower looked against the cloudy sky.

Carrollton Presbyterian Church - Carrollton

Sun Aug 2, 2015

I loved this old church in downtown Carrollton on the square. I love to see these old places of worship kept up in downtown areas and squares. It adds to the charm of small towns. There was also an interesting Episcopal Church building right across the street that I will post a photo of in the future.

Sanctuary - Columbus

Sun Jun 28, 2015

Since it's Sunday I thought I would post a photo that I took a while back of the Sanctuary where I worship every Sunday. I had been looking forward to taking this photo for a while when I finally took the chance to do it before worship service one Sunday. I've always loved the tall stained glass in the back and the sun always shines directly through it. Unfortunately the original photo just didn't do justice to how the sun actually burst through it so I used an old photoshop tool and added the lens flare. That may be the first time I've used a Photshop lens flare since I first discovered it in college, but on this ocassion I thought it a more accurate representation of how the sun shines through the window and, after all, I want you to see what I saw.

Church at Sunrise - Pearl River County

Mon Jun 1, 2015

Spent last weekend on the Mississippi panhandle in a cabin near Poplarville, thanks to a friend! I covered 8 counties that weekend which put a big dent in my march toward having a photo from all 82 counties by December 31. I woke up before sunrise one morning and just rode around looking for things to photograph and I passed by this church on Hwy 26 (the road on the right) a few miles outside of Poplarville and thought the sunrise looked cool in the backdrop behind that tree. I foresaw the composition in my head so I parked and shot a couple of photos and I really like how it turned out. Sunrises are the best, but unfortunately the hardest to get because I have to wake up so early!

I am posting this from Las Vegas, NV! It's my first time here and I cannot wait to get out and shoot around the area. I know this blog is specifically for photos of Mississippi but in the near future I will add a page with non Mississippi photos if anyone is interested in seeing them (which will hopefully include many awesome Vegas photos) since I do shoot outside of Mississippi when I get the chance.

A Church in Ashes - Columbus

Thu May 7, 2015

I was told about this church near the Mississippi University for Women campus that apparently recently burned down, so I wanted to capture some photos of it, so one day around sunset I went out to do that. I am unaware of what happened or where the church meets now, but hopefully this building will be restored in the near future. As someone who takes his faith very seriously and recognizes the importance of a church body, I want people who see this photo, and even someone who is a member of this church, to find beauty even in the midst of ashes.

First Methodist - Okolona

Wed Apr 15, 2015

I got some really good photos while visiting Okolona and walking up and down the downtown area there. Found this pretty church right across the street from the neat house I posted a photo of last week. My trip through Monroe, Chickasaw and Calhoun Counties was filled with cloudy skies and a good bit of rain, but the clouds really added to the photos. Unfortunately you can't control the weather, but you can hope that it works to your favor when you take the photos. Several of them did, fortunately.

First Baptist Church - Louisville

Mon Apr 6, 2015

Faith is an important part of life for many Mississippians, including myself, and as such I always like to take some photos of local churches, both big and small, when I'm visiting different towns. First Baptist in Louisville caught my attention while I was walking around so I shot some photos of it. I shoot lots of photos of buildings from a distance to get the whole building in the shot, so sometimes I like to play around with differents shots so I will close in on it and just get a portion of the building. It helps to get out of the mundane shots and find something interesting. On this one I closed in on the stairway leading up to the front of the building and the textures turned out really nice as well as the leading line of the hand rail.

First Presbyterian - West Point

Thu Apr 2, 2015

This is First Presbyterian in downtown West Point right across the street from Sally Kate Winters Park at sunset. This is from a photo walk that I took around the downtown area in which I got several good shots, some that I have alreay posted. Although the building is the focal point, I really like the detail of the tree on the right.

I'm really excited that spring is upon us and the leaves are returning along with the green grass, which means more opportunities to get out and shoot the rest of the state. I'll probably put a small tutorial soon on the basics of creating HDR photos, so be looking for that if you're interested in learning HDR photography.

Elvis Presley Childhood Church

Thu Mar 19, 2015

Shot this photo the same day that I shot the photo of the Elvis Boyhood Statue. I originally wasn't real happy with this shot, but it's one that I kept playing around with until I finally became happy with it. This is the result. I am hoping to get back up to Tupelo real soon because there is so much more to shoot there. Doing some travelling this weekend so if you have any suggestions feel free to hit me up. I will most likely explore Chickasaw County and see what happens from there.
