Here is a nice sunset from Columbus Lake near the Lock & Dam. Sunsets on water are great because it's like you get a double sunset with the reflection off of the water. Enjoy!Read More

This is a photo I took at Lake Lowndes during mid-fall. That is the perfect time to capture some great autumn colors. These trees were full of those great earth tone colors that pop out in a photo. Otherwise, this is a pretty simple photo of a lake and lake shore, but the great clouds and very blue sky (along with the fall colors, of course) really create more interest here and, for me, is very pleasing to look at. I made sure to give it a bright feel as well to make it a, well, happy photo. In hindsight, I wish that I would have framed it so that the stump sticking up out of the water was not dead center, but instead to the right or left, even if slightly so. Oh well. Live and learn.Read More

I love this photo from the Columbus Lock & Dam. The sky was great and the foam from the water really stood out and gave a great texture to the water. I took this photo about 2 years ago, but gave it new life when I re-edited it this week. Here's to hoping for more great sunset skies.Read More

So apparently Amazon Web Services went down today. I didn't know anything about Amazon Web Services until today, when I couldn't upload today's photo to SmugMug, which is the photo service I use to host all of these lovely photos you see everyday. But, alas, here it is, after 9pm and it is back up and running and I am able to continue my streak of a photo every single day.
This is a church building that burned down some time last year. It is such a sad sight, but at the same time a beautiful one with the sunet glow in the sky. The good news is that I rode by this lot a couple of weeks ago and a new building is going up.Read More

Here is a photo that I took almost 3 years ago at the Columbus Lock & Dam. I really like that I caught the birds flying by in the "Flying V" formation (Mighty Ducks anyone?). It's a pretty simple photo otherwise with a little mix of symmetry and assymetry and a vintage feel.Read More

I've been playing a lot lately with the Google Nik Collection, which is a photoshop plug-in that is free to download and use. It has lots of useful presets and filters and also allows you to create your own. The more I play with it the more flexible I find it is and I have started creating my own presets. I have always loved the vintage look in art, especially photography and taking a new photo and giving it a vintage look. The Nik Collection really allows you to explore that. This one is fairly subtle with some vintage toning and a little bit of dust & scratch texture added. I really like how this turned out.
The is the River Walk bridge in Columbus, which was fairly recently re-done as a nice walking bridge onto the island that sits on the other side of this channel. I have taken tons of photos at the River Walk, as it is a nice place on the water to go and hang out.Read More

I took this photo back in 2014 and finally edited it today. These folks were very willing to let me photograph them as they played basketball near sunset at the Columbus Lock & Dam. I always ask people for permission to photograph them and, so far, I have never been turned down. When I'm shooting for HDR I don't typically photograph people, but when I see people out and about and I think it would make for a good photo, I try to seize the opportunity.Read More

I have been going back and refining old photos, some that I have posted and some that I overlooked or though weren't good enough. Having learned lots of new editing techniques I'm having a blast implementing and experimenting with them and seeing what comes out of it. I took this photo in downtown Columbus when I was living in Columbus. My wife and I moved to West Point in late 2015, so many of my early photos in HDR were taken in Columbus because I would just get out and about and practice, experiment and learn. I am working on branching out to more and more of the state so be patient with me if you haven't seen any or enough photos from your home town or home county. I'll get there.Read More

I've been going back through some really old photos the last couple of days, reflecting on the two years I have spent posting photos to this blog and the three years that I've been immersed in HDR photography. This is a really early photo that I felt I could never get quite right until now. In the early days I was pretty much guessing at the post-processing part of photography, doing more experimenting that anything else. Over that time I have learned a lot and am now more calculating in the approach I take to post-processing (though not with every single photo). I can take a look at a photo and know how to attack it in Lightroom and Photoshop and foresee the outcome a little better, mostly because I know my tools much better. I'm still learning and hopefully growing and will continue to get better and better. Posting everyday allows me to see the progress I'm making and foreces me to keep getting better.
