Nix's Barber Shop

Wed Sep 21, 2016

I took this shot the same night as yesterday's photo. This is actually where I got my haircuts as a kid growing up in West Point. Mr. Burt Nix cut my hair many times, and I have fond memories of going with my dad and my brother to get our "ears lowered". I remember several older men always being there, telling jokes and far-fetched stories. Probably my most vivid memories are of Jesse, the shoe shine guy, who always had a smile on his face and would joke around with me and my brother and ask me to do my impression of a local West Pointian, which I was almost always, in my perpetual shyness, too embarrassed to do. It really was the typical small town barbershop, where you discussed the latest football game, or the goings on around town. My wife cuts my hair now (she is a licensed cosmetologist), but I do often miss those days where things seemed much simpler. I believe Mr. Burt is retired but his barber shop is still going strong and I'm sure it's not much different now than it was when I frequented it as a kid, only missing Jesse who passed some years ago.

Good Food & Light Trails

Tue Sep 20, 2016

I walked downtown last night in West Point and wanted to mess around with some long exposures, usingthe BULB setting on my A6000, which I have never really done before. I downloaded a free long exposture app on my phone called Frist Exposure to help me get the time calculation down. I took a couple of 3.5 minute exposures, but they didn't quite turn out how I wanted. This particular photo is about a 1:15 exposure shot at F22 and 100ISO. I really like the reflection of the light trails in the photo from the window to the right. Unfortunately, traffic in West Point at 8:00 pm is not exactly bumper to bumper, so I would like to play around with this some more in some heavier traffic. One of the tricky things with these shots was trying to not shoot the nearest light pole, because in my longer exposures they became really blown out and pretty much ruined the photo. The lights in the distance add to the photo, because they are not as bright and don't create what seem like 50 foot starbursts. I really wanted to stand in the middle of the street and do a LE shot, but I didn't think law enforcement would approve. Maybe next time.

Black and White Bokeh

Sun Aug 28, 2016

Sometimes you have to zoom in on the world and find beauty in the small things. This is some type of flower or plant (No idea what kind) that I found while out behind my parent's church building during sunset after a light rain.

Building Art

Sat Jul 30, 2016

Here is a shot from downtown West Point that I took during a great sunset. West Point has incorporated some banners with works of art on them draped on the front of a few of the buildings which I think is great. This shot is nothing fancy, but I really liked this scene.

Sunset Strip

Tue Jul 26, 2016

Caught a great sunset on the way home from work last week as I came into West Point. I knew this would be a great spot, because I've taken photos from near this spot before. I love catching the light trails as the daylight fades away. I actually wasn't able to get to this spot when I wanted to, so the light is much dimmer than I had hoped for, but I really like the shot nonetheless. This is actually a single shot HDR as opposed to the multiple exposure photos I almost always post.

Weekend of Textures

Fri Jul 15, 2016

This weekend I am going to try something a little different. I am calling it "Weekend of Textures". Today through Sunday each photo will be processed using different textures. Today's photo is from Clay County where I spotted this water truck parked next to the windmill (See yesterday's post). I though this photo would be a perfect candidate for a texture so away I went playing around with textures that I've collected through my own photography along with some textures from Google's Nik Collection. I used 3 of my own textures on this one and I played with the Pin Light Blend Mode on a couple of them which created these nice rainbow like colors that you can see in the top left and right corners. One of the textures was of a pieces of peeling wood that had been painted red and I think that Pin Light Blending really brought out some of the colors that make up the red. Very neat effect. It nice for photos to have a sort of worn vintage look such as this. More tomorrow!

Coming Storm

Thu Jul 14, 2016

As I was coming home from Columbus this past Sunday, I could see the approaching storm in the distance when I was coming up on the windmill on Hwy. 50, so I thought it would make a nice photo. I have photographed the windmill a lot, which you can see by looking through my Clay County photos. I think this may be my favorite one, because of the clouds in the background and the way that I chose to edit it. I rarely, if ever, do this, but I added a good bit of noise to the photo to give it a bit of a more vintage/film look. There wasn't a ton of color in the scene so I thought it fit perfectly to edit it this way. The American flag is a nice touch also.

I really tried to make sure I didn't lose the rain coming out of the clouds in the middle of the photo. I really wanted to capture the darkness of the scene due to the storm and really keep those shadows under the clouds to hold on to the drams that I saw when photographing. I actually had to hold my camera as high as I could to capture the rain in the distance as I was a little too low to get it otherwise.

Fishin'

Fri Jul 1, 2016

I posted a couple of photos here and here of these two fishing a while back. I got quite a few sweet moments of these two boys enjoy some fishing time together at a friend's house. There was no posing or anything, I just photographed them while they did their thing, and they didn't mind one bit.

Red Truck

Mon Jun 20, 2016

Here is another angle of a water truck that was parked by the windmill on Hwy 50 between West Point & Columbus in Clay County. Here is the first photo that I posted. I think old beat up or rusty vehicles look so good in HDR because the texture real pops out.

Railroad Rainbow

Tue Jun 14, 2016

This after-rain sunset kept giving me so many photos, so I have to keep posting them. This rainbow was just the icing on the cake and in this picture you can see where the rain is moving from and how the skies are clearing in the west creating some great colors and light. This was on the edge of town going north.
