Sunset Rainbow

Fri Jun 10, 2016

Here is a photo from the same sunset that I've been posting photos of the last few days, however, this is from West Point as I was heading out to Monroe County. I spotted this awesome rainbow that had been developing as I was driving and I was rushing, trying to find a good spot to capture it. I ended up on some railroad tracks behind some tall grass and this is the end result. Enjoy!

Water Truck

Wed Jun 1, 2016

I've been seeing this truck parked by the windmill the last few times I've ventured down Hwy. 50, so last night on my way back to West Point, there was a nice sunset so I decided to get a shot of the truck with the sunset in the background. I really like how it turned out. I have a thing for photographing old, beat up, abandoned, or vintage things against beautiful sunsets. It creates such a contrast between the rugged object and a beautiful natural setting, which, to me, makes the object beautiful itself.

Moon Over a Gazeebo

Mon May 30, 2016

Here is a photo of the gazeebo at Sally Kate Winters Park in the heart of downtown West Point at night. I closed the aperture all the way to 22 for this photo to get the starburst effect fromt the park lights and the moon. It's interesting to shoot like this at night, both for the starbursts and to get some good long exposures, though there was no attemp to get light trails in this shot, but I did capture some movement in the clouds.

Puttin' on a Ritz

Fri May 20, 2016

I really love the sign for the Ritz or Cafe Ritz in downtown West Point. It is an old movie theater that was renovated and is now a restaraunt and event center. They really kept that vintage feel with this sign and I love to photograph during different parts of the day. Search my photos for a couple more photos that I have posted of it in the past. I shot this one with my 50mm Sony lens so it's much more cropped than previous photos that I've taken, which really features the details of the sign much more.

Almost all of the HDR photos that I take are taken with my 19mm Sigma Wide Angle lens because it works better for most landscape shots. Sometimes, though, I shoot with my 50mm lens which, obviously, gives me a more limited focal length so the shots are always tighter, but I constantly love the photos that I get when I use it. This is the City Hall building in downtown West Point on a sunny late afternoon. I took this while I was doing a pre-prom photo shoot.

Selfie Under Stars

Fri May 13, 2016

Here is a super cool selfie I took by the West Point windmill at night (obviously). I was attempting to capture the milky way this night, but unfortunately the light pollution was a little too much for that, although I got some great star photos. This was about a 30 second exposure so I had to stay as still as possible so as not to end up all blurry in the photo. It's impossible to stay completely still so there is a little bit of bluriness going on as I swayed back and forth ever so slightly. I love taking night time photos and hope to get more very very soon.

A Night in the Park

Sun Apr 24, 2016

Since I have been very limited in my travels lately, due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances, I have been shooting a lot of photos within a few blocks of my house, and honestly, I feel like I've gotten some really good photos. It has also forced me to play around with different types of shots because I am shooting the same areas multiple times. I've done a good bit of nighttime photography which has allowed me to learn more about what works and what doesn't. I have learned that it is ok to shoot with my aperture turned all the way down to f22 when it's dark to get some nice starburst effects with lights (which you can get with an aperture setting of at least f16). It's given me some good nighttime photos such as this one from Sally Kate Winters Park in downtown West Point.

Street Bokeh Experiment

Fri Apr 22, 2016

It's always fun to experiment with photography by trying different angles, different aperture settings, or laying your camera in the middle of the street and shooting straight ahead. The good thing about digital photography is that every photograph is free, so you can take as many photos as you want as many different ways as you want and it doesn't cost you an extra dime. In this shot, I literally set my camera on the stripe in the road (making sure no cars were coming), set the f-stop to 1.8, manually focused so that the only area in focus was just a few feet in front of the camera, and took the shot. I love creating nice bokehs with lights, because they make these nice little circles of color that are so fun to look at. I wanted to create a nice depth of field with a small area of focus, but still be able to have recognizable objects in the background. Sort of a slight abstract photo. Go out and experiment with compositions, angles, camera settings and see what comes out of the camera!

Church at Night

Thu Apr 21, 2016

Here is a shot from my little photo walk in downtown West Point the other night. The great thing about where I live is that when I want to shoot, I can just walk one block over and I'm in a beautiful downtown area with endless photography possibilities. This was just after sunset, looking east and, as you can see at the bottom of the photo, I caught a car passing in front as I took the shot, which I think was a 30 second exposure.

Down the Hill

Mon Apr 18, 2016

I went downtown in West Point and took a ton of photos at sunset. I was feeling super creative so I was shooting every kind of shot I could think with my 19mm wide angle lens and my 50mm lens that I use mostly for portraits. I am anxious to process all of them and post them soon. Here is some light trails that I captured with some light from the sun still shining over the horizon.
